Description:

DECOLONISING SUSTAINABILITY
BISA ENVIRONMENT GROUP WORKSHOP
9.30 -4.30, SAT 8TH DECEMBER 2018, TRINITY CENTRE, BRISTOL, BS2 0NW
Organised by the Schumacher Institute, Bristol. Contact: jenneth@schumacherinstitute.org.uk
Local and global agendas for sustainability are being worked out in the contexts of societies that are still greatly impacted by colonial histories and thinking. In many ways colonial forms of development have proved to be a disaster for sustainability, introducing ecologically disastrous and socially destructive forms of modernity. ‘Decolonising’ is a wide ambition to re-think and re-evaluate knowledge, culture and practice in ways that reflect and respect colonised groups and societies. This workshop has been developed to introduce decolonial perspectives to a wider group of participants and to think further about how these might interact with, and inform, sustainability agendas.
Initial speakers for the workshop are:
Olivia Rutazibwa, Senior Lecturer University of Portsmouth http://www2.port.ac.uk/centre-for-european-and-international-studies-res...
Lisa Tilley, Lecturer & Leverhulme Fellow Birkbeck University http://www.bbk.ac.uk/politics/our-staff/academic/lisa-tilley
We will also have the opportunity to discuss how these issues play out in the context of Bristol and more local attempts to move towards inclusive sustainability agendas. This includes valuing of the knowledge and experiences of diaspora communities.
