With Bas Verplanken, University of Bath in conversation with Amy Coulthard, Avon Wildlife Trust.

Moving towards sustainable existence is arguably the greatest long-term challenge humans have ever faced. The rate at which we introduce changes to the Earth's surface and atmosphere exceeds nature's ability to absorb these without leading to major consequences. Human behaviour makes a significant contribution to what is happening. In this introduction Bas Verplanken will explore why people behave as they do, and why this often leads to unsustainable choices. He will then critically review some avenues to change, highlighting traditional and less traditional solutions. This introduction will then be followed by a Q & A with Amy Coulthard and the audience.

This lecture is organised in partnership with the Bath Festival of Nature which takes place on 1-9 June. The Bath Festival of Nature is a free, wild day out for the whole family, featuring the region’s best-loved wildlife organisations and a chance to explore nature in a heritage park with a stunning riverside location. Create, explore and run wild in the heart of the city with performances, talks, walks and a showcase of hands-on fun from local and national environmental organisations.
