Green and ethical Christmas gift guide in Bath

Green up your Christmas shopping this year and make 2018 your most green and ethical year to date with our guide to eco and green Christmas gifts in Bath.

Stocking fillers

Metal straws are a great alternative to the dreaded plastic and soggy paper straw, these metal straws are reusable and come with a special brush to ensure they are hygienic as well as well as eco-friendly! They also come in a silicone holder for easy storage. The turtles (and recipient) will thank you later!  You can grab these at Lakeland on 21 New Bond Street.

Lush’s shampoo bars are definitely something to consider when doing the Christmas shop! Shampoo bars are essentially a bar of soap for your hair, and whilst this may not seem appealing at first, there are many reasons to consider getting your hands on one of these! Firstly, they smell and look great and with dozens to choose from you really won't be stuck for choice for your loved one or pal! Also with 80-100 washes in every bar its economical for them too! If you really fancy treating them, Lush also sell a cute little round tin to keep your shampoo bar in for only £2.50 (taking the hassle and waste out of gift wrapping too!) These bars are said to be full of the natural ingredients and oils that your hair needs, doing the job of three 250g bottles of shampoo. And a bonus fun-fact is that one lorry full of solid shampoo bars holds roughly the same number of washes as fifteen lorries of liquid shampoo, seems like a no-brainer really! Pop down to their store at 8 Union Street to take a closer look!

Reusable coffee cups are one of the most must-have products in society today and there are so many to choose from, but we have fallen in love with these Ecoffee cups which you can buy at Nisbets on 1-3 James Street West. These cups are made with natural sustainable bamboo fibre and are light, leaving no plastic aftertaste when enjoying your much needed morning caffeine hit. You can grab them in different sizes and colours, also their designer William Morris line is bound to add a splash of colour to the mundane Monday commute (take a look at this one). This thoughtful gift will not only ease the conscience of the lucky recipient but also the purse strings, as most coffee houses in Bath offer a discount for bringing your own cup adding a massive saving on their daily life by next Christmas. I don't think there’s much more to consider but which fabulous design they’ll love the most!

For the fashion conscious in your life

Gift some more ethically sourced, unique and eco-friendly options instead of those same old high-street mass produced purchases.

If it's affordable and more eco-friendly clothing you’re looking for, the second-hand shops around Bath are a great place to start. Not only is this city blessed with a variety of shops dedicated to pre-loved goods, but some of them also host designer items. Mint at 12 Manvers Street is full of top-quality branded clothing with a fraction of the price tag so if it's high-end you’re after it’s a good place to start! Similarly, Grace and Ted in Kingsmead Square offers a variety of pre-loved designer goods at discounted prices. However, if it's vintage fashion you’re shopping for the host of vintage shops and charity shops in Bath always have something to offer, for example, Jack and Danny’s on London Street. And to really top off the pre-loved list, Rolfey’s at 5-7 Wellsway has all your antique and collectable needs covered!

Bibico is a ladies fashion retailer with eco-friendly at its core. Fair Trade, ethical and beautiful all at the same time. Their lovely products include dresses, tops, knitwear & accessories and you’ll find their little independent shop at 9A Bartlett Street. Not only this, but they’ll also have a chalet at the Bath Christmas Market where they will be selling cosy hand knitted goods for both Men and Women. So get yourself down to their stall on Abbeygate Street for all of your hat, glove and scarf needs!

For the foodie you know and love

Perhaps a hamper of their favourite snacks and ingredients is something you know they'll love.
At Harvest Natural Foods you can grab them all of the spices and dried goods they need in a more eco-friendly way by bringing your own containers. Take the effort out of gift wrapping too by taking along a pretty jar to put these goodies in! We are loving these cute little spice jars from Nisbets to jazz up your home. Alternatively, you could grab them some Bee’s Wrap, the reusable food wrap taking over from the dreaded cling film, you can get your hands on this at Lakeland!

Sweet treats are something no Christmas is complete without, Grown-Up Marshmallows are here to help! They will be here for the Christmas markets and you really don’t want to miss out on this so make sure to pay them a visit. They specialise in marshmallow treats made out of 100% naturally sourced and packaged ingredients, made on Exmoor National Park and coming in a variety of flavours they are bound to excite anyone! There are gift sets on offer too and you'll find their stall on Bath Street, stall number 96.

Not forgetting the little people

Getting hold of the perfect toys for the children on your Christmas list is crucial to retaining the magic of Christmas morning. Keeping it eco is made easy with the help of these Bath gems.

In a world surrounded by flimsy, plastic toys which are good for nothing, investing in some gorgeous and fun recycled toys is definitely something to consider this Christmas. My Small World toy shop at 19 - 21 St Lawrence Street is a toy shop dedicated to the importance of play, and also stock some incredible eco-friendly toys for your little ones. The eco-friendly Green Toys is just one of these, their toys are made of recycled plastic milk cartons, and contain no metal which means they are versatile, for the area in which they can be played with, and are also dishwasher friendly! If it's something more classic you’re looking for, they also stock Le Toy Van products, which are beautiful ethically made wooden toys designed and hand finished in the UK. They are built using natural materials with the imaginations of children at heart.

To keep the little ones warm whilst they enjoy this beautiful city at Christmas, head down to Up To Seven for all your knitwear and clothing desires. A majority of their products are designed and made in Bath and are as unique and cute as they come. Check out this little Christmas hat for your baby or toddler. Alongside their own products, they also stock a handpicked variety of nationally renowned designers including Funky Feet, Knicky Knitwear and Kite Kids. You can find this store at 6 Pulteney Bridge and you’re sure to find something you and the little ones will fall in love with!
