Based in St Werburghs in East-Central Bristol, we serve the local communities of Lawrence Hill, Ashley and Easton wards and communities of interest across the city. The Centre is managed by the St Werburghs Community Association, which aims to provide meeting spaces and facilities for individuals, community groups and voluntary organisations. There are over 200 groups that use the Centre on regular basis. The rooms at the Centre are also available for hire by individuals for private parties and commercial organisations for events and training.
We focus on building mutually beneficial partnerships between groups and organisations in the community. In support of this, we run various events and projects, current to include Raking & Baking (cooking & gardening courses), Tai Chi for over 50's, Easy PC (computer classes), Jobschool (career advice), Picnic in the Park and we also have other organisations based in the Centre who are working within the local communities.
The Community Centre has been operating on this site since 1971 and in 1999 was registered as a charity and company limited by guarantee. In June 2010 we completed £1m Capital Project funded by Community Assets Programme, HM Government. This enabled us to build the new environmentally friendly Annexe in the former car park and carry out major improvement works on the main Victorian building, making it warm, more energy efficient and fully accessible.
The main Victorian building now benefits from double glazed windows, loft insulation and a new roof. Also, all external walls have been insulated with “Warmcell”, an insulation manufactured from 100% recycled waste paper.
During the Capital Project we also replaced our old oil heating system with new gas boilers. Thanks to that all our rooms in the main building can be controlled individually and we can monitor our energy use against weather and our room use. We also rewired old electrics and installed new energy efficient lights throughout, all of that complete with sensor controls for further energy saving.
The new green Annexe building has energy efficient underfloor heating, sunlight tubes designed to capture and intensify natural daylight and a Sedum grass roof, which not only provides a high level of insulation but also reduces the level of rainwater entering the drains.
In November 2010 we achieved the VISIBLE CommunitiesTM accreditation which is a quality systems standard for the charity and community sector distributed by Community Matters.
In November 2013 we won the Community Venue of the Year Award at 'Voscurs', Bristol's Voluntary & Community Sector awards.
In January 2016 we have been awarded Silver in the Green Tourism's 'Conference Venue' Category.
